Have you ever known someone to suffer from constipation or diarrhea? Just imagine the effect that chronic constipation and diarrhea can have on someone’s life. Avoiding social engagements, avoiding travel, calling in sick to work, unable to enjoy sports and activities, and that’s aside from the physical pain and discomfort. Many people turn to medication, problem solved, or is it? Is constipation or diarrhea caused by being born with not enough medicine in the body? Of course not. Medicine may temporarily cover the problem, but it does not fix the cause. Without fixing the cause, the pain most always returns.

So, what are constipation and diarrhea? They are symptoms, the body’s way of alerting us that something is wrong. Well then, what is wrong? Are there natural solutions, and what does this have to do with chiropractic? Let’s start with a quiz, true or false. As long as someone eats healthy food, they never have to worry about constipation or diarrhea. The answer: false. Eating a healthy diet is extremely important, but someone can eat well and still develop constipation and diarrhea. Constipation and diarrhea are symptoms that digestion is not properly working. What causes digestive system problems? It begins with stress. Affect of chronic stress upon digestion: slowed motility of small intestine causes diarrhea, faster motility of large intestine causes constipation.

Another quiz, which is longer in length, the small intestine or the large intestine? Answer: the small intestine. Wow, So, why is the large intestine called large? Because it has a greater width. Constipation develops when stress decreases the body’s absorption of sodium. Sodium helps form bile, a substance that allows the bowels to move smoothly. Without enough sodium, bile is too thick and constipation results. Diarrhea occurs when undigested food particles accumulate in the intestines. The body tries to flush the buildup of food molecules from your system by loosening the stools.

Another kind of stress that affects the digestive system and can cause constipation or diarrhea, stress to the spine. How? The digestive system is controlled by nerves. These nerves come from the spine. If the spine is out of alignment, these nerves will not work as they should. When the nerves don’t work well, the digestive organs cannot properly function. It’s called a spinal subluxation. A subluxation? What’s that? A condition in which a spinal segment is out of alignment with the adjacent segment. Nerves, which branch off of the spinal cord, no longer properly work. Subluxations cannot be felt. A constipation or diarrhea sufferer could be trying ever other remedy, not knowing that the cause is spinal subluxation. Removing subluxations will help naturally.
